Week 5 Update!

Happy Friday to all! I hope you all had a wonderful shortened week. We have been busy here in room B9!

In math, we are continuing to work on our addition and subtraction strategies and more specifically looking at these strategies in a variety of word problems. Everyone is loving getting extra practice during class time and earning awards for iXL skills. We are also going to start our Moby Max fact practice over the next week. This is a great way for students to build fact fluency with addition and subtraction before moving to multiplication and division.

In reading, we are continuing to focus on a read aloud each week. This week, we are going to be reading the story, "Saturday and Teacakes." This is a wonderful story about a young boy reminiscing on time spent with his grandmother. The genre of the story is a memoir. While we read and do activities throughout the week, we will focus on our visualizing skills as well as the theme/central message of a story.

We are also really digging deep into our chapter book studies. Every afternoon during our reading block, students have a sustained amount of time to independently read a chapter book on their level while I conference with individual students. This process helps to build stamina and a love of reading! Whenever students finish a chapter book, they do a "book talk" via dojo so we can continue to check for comprehension. Be on the lookout for "book talks" on your child's dojo portfolio.

For social studies, we are wrapping up our economics unit and moving into our first science unit on forces and motion. We did an awesome project on entrepreneurs over the last two weeks. Students learned about important entrepreneurs and how they made a difference in the world around us.

Finally, just a few reminders for the weeks ahead! We will have our third grade curriculum night on Thursday, September 12th at 5:30 pm. We hope you all can join us for an awesome meeting that will provide more information on your child's academic school year. In addition, the 2019 fall book fair will kick off next Thursday, September 12th. This event will run until Thursday, September 19th.

Thank you all for your continued support! As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions you have! Enjoy your weekend!
